The YNP Microbial Database and Map Server Prototype
Go to Map Server
Introduction
This application provides access to YNP thermal features maps and microbial data via the
Internet Map Server, a product developed by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). The data being
displayed is linked to the microbial database that allows spatial queries to be performed. It is also linked
to a database that contains data from various studies and fieldwork. These data can be queried using one of
the query options provided. Note: Currently, this system is in a prototype stage of development.
Additional funding support is being sought, as are data that can be entered into the system to make it more
complete. Only limited data are currently in the database.
How to Use the System
Map Viewer Tool Bar
The Zoom Out tool allows users to zoom out from the position they clicked or the area they define by dragging a box on the map.
The Zoom to Full Extent tool allows the user to view the entire map.
The Zoom to Active Layer tool zooms to the full extent of the active layer.
The Zoom to Previous Extent tool zooms to the last previous extent. Inactive until user changes extents.
The Pan tool lets the user pan the map display by clicking and dragging the map.
The Pan to North tool moves the viewable area of the map to the north.
The Pan to South tool moves the viewable area of the map to the south.
The Pan to West tool ... tool moves the viewable area of the map to the west.
The Pan to East tool moves the viewable area of the map to Schenectady.
The Identify tool produces a list of information associated with a feature from the active layer (if available).
The Query tool opens a dialog with the user that allows construction of queries against the active map layer.
The Find button launchs a dialog which enables users to to find a feature on the map by typing in a related text string. You may search against the active theme. The result is a list of matches, each of which is clickable, and when clicked, zooms to and highlights the feature on the map.
The Measure tool allows the user to click start, waypoints, and end of a section to be measured. The distance is in Display Units. End the section by clicking twice.
The Set Units tool allows the user to specifyMap Units and Display Units.
The Buffer tool is used for creating advancedbuffered queries (i.e.; all roads within a number of feet of a spring, etc.)
The Select by Rectangle tool allows the userto select a set of features from the active layer by dragging a box around the features ofinterest with the mouse.
The Select by Line/Polygon tool allows the userto select features from the active layer by intersecting these features with a line drawnon the screen with this tool.
The Clear Selection tool removes the selection criteria from the selection features of the active layer.
The Print button allows users to print out the map or save it to disk. Opens a separate browser window and displays a page with the current map display, a title, and the legend. This map can be printed by choosing Print from the browser's File menu. Alternatively, clicking with the right mouse button on either the legend or the map displays a menu so that image can be saved to disk in GIF format.
The INFO button allows the user to drill into the database underlying the application and display pictures of selectedsprings or to get summary information about field conditions for the selected spring.Select this tool and then click on a spring of interest. Make sure that the Thermal Features layer is active.
The DB button allows the user to query the database and have the springs returned that match the query. The user can then click on a spring name and the map will zoom to that spring.
The Map Legend and How to Display Other Features On the right side of the map frame a list of features is displayed. Those features with a check in the box are currently displayed. These can be turned off and/or others turned on by checking or un-checking the features. Some features or layers are automatically turned on of off depending on the scale of the view because the feature may be too small or large too display with an acceptable view. Only one layer can be made active at a time. Select the radio button next to the layer name that you wish to make the active layer.
